Door stops have been around since the 1700s, as functional, cast iron weights meant to keep doors open. By the Civil War, however, they became recognized for their decorative use. Their popularity boomed in the 1920s-30s, when U.S. foundries thrived. Antique door stops are usually made of cast iron, brass, or pewter, and were often spray painted for more color.
